My cultural awakening: a Marina Abramović show helped me to stop hating my abusive father | Marina Abramović | The Guardian

At an Abramović art takeover I discovered the quiet strength of a political protester from Myanmar. It gave me a new father figure – and unblocked my creativity I had recently read Marina’s memoir Walk Through Walls, which had resonated. So, when I’d seen the event advertised – hours-long performances by artists she’d invited, curated and introduced by Marina – I bought a £60 ticket and waited for my time slot to enter the Queen Elizabeth Hall.It came at an interesting time in my life. I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian family, the daughter of a priest who was physically abusive. I’d been in therapy for years, but my experiences still affected me and I’d recently cut contact with my father with my family.I was immediately drawn to one of the artists, a man from Myanmar who was to perform the chair piece with a cloth sack over his head. We heard how he’d been part of an organisation in Myanmar that opposed violence and therefore risked death if he was publicly identified. As people moved between performers, I saw him, seated in the atrium, with a large crowd; I waited for a quieter moment to return. When I finally stood before him, I was overcome. I felt an urge to sit down in front of him and didn’t care what others thought. I was compelled to do it for myself.

It can be on a network, basic cable, premium channel, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, YouTube, or whatever you can stream on your smart TV, as long as a new episode was made available within the past week (ending Sunday)—or, in the case of shows released all at once, it has to have been released within the previous four weeks. Below is what we’re enjoying right now. Happy viewing! Honorable Mentions: Welcome to Wrexham (Hulu), Revival (Syfy), Stick (Apple TV+), Department Q (Netflix) Network: AcornTV Last Week: Ineligible This Week: The latest mystery involved a music producer and missing pieces of rock ‘n’ roll history.A largely case-of-the-week style procedural, Art Detectives follows the newly formed duo of DI Palmer and DS Malik as they investigate murders with a decidedly historical or artistic flair. Some of the cases are more of a stretch than others— Titanic memorabilia, really?—but for the most part, the mysteries are opportunities for Mick (and the show) to nerd out over everything from Vermeers and Viking treasure to rare and ultra-high-end wine.Resident Alien remains one of TV’s funniest and heartfelt shows. It feels like Sheridan is moving towards a more definitive wrap up for this world and its characters based on the real-world limits of cable-based television these days. If that happens, Sheridan and his writers have earned my trust in them bringing it in for a landing in ways that I’ll howl with laughter and sob like a baby. Not many shows can do that in equal measure and if this is the last season for Resident Alien, everything in the set up of Season 4 points to it going down as one of those all-timer sleeper shows that found the audience flowers that it deserves. —-Tera Bennett [Full Review] Network: Peacock Last Week: 1 This Week: We got our first tease of Patti Harrison. Poker Face arrived in early 2023 as a smart, modern riff on Columbo starring Natasha Lyonne as an effortlessly cool, almost-psychic, entirely unintentional detective, with a stage-setting pilot written and directed by Knives Out creator Ria

My 18 Favourite TV Shows of All Time

If you're looking for something new to watch, here are my 18 favourite TV shows of all time, each of which gets top marks in my books. It’s a topic of conversation with friends and colleagues, alike, as we rhyme off our top fives or pick apart the new show we’re watching. I have been a voracious viewer of TV since I can remember, way back to the days that I would set my VCR to record sitcoms when I knew I wouldn’t be home (I’m really dating myself here). If I have earmarked the date that the season premieres, or I’m anxiously refreshing my e-mail inbox for the confirmation message of screener availability access for reasons beyond just completing assignments, that’s the first sign. I would watch it again. If I have already watched an entire series a second or even third time, that’s a good indication that it’s something special. I rarely re-watch shows.Constantly researching and sharing. If it’s a show I can’t stop talking to friends and family members about, Googling theories, reviews, and opinions and analysis, and constantly nagging friends to watch, it’s a top-tier show in my books. Why I Love It: Way back in 2006, I was sitting in my office when my boss at the time walked in and said, “hey, I came across this show last night and it’s right up your alley. You should watch it.” That show was Dexter. I have a well-known fascination with true crime and the psychology of serial killers, and he was right.

Kelly Clarkson Cancels Opening Night of Las Vegas Residency Hours Before Show

Kelly Clarkson cancelled the first two shows of her Las Vegas Residency at Caesars Palace hours before the American Idol alum’s July 4 concert: “The prep and rehearsals have taken a toll on my voice.” Just hours before she planned to kick off her Studio Sessions residency at Las Vegas’ Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace July 4, the “Since U Been Gone” singer postponed her first two shows. “We have been working 24/7 to make Studio Sessions the most intimate and extraordinary experience with and for my incredible fans,” Kelly wrote in a statement shared to Instagram July 4.As for why the American Idol alum—who shares kids River, 11, and Remington “Remy” Alexander, 9, with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock—had to cancel the shows so last minute? Well, it seemed she was experiencing some vocal strain. “The prep and rehearsals have taken a toll on my voice,” the statement continued. After all, Kelly has kept her voice warm while nailing countless covers during the “Kellyoke” segment of her Emmy-winning talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show. And recently, it’s become a family affair. "My daughter is here today," Kelly said during an April 2 episode of her eponymous show, noting her eldest was shadowing showrunner Alex Duda for the day.Oh my God. I love it. You're like a little mini producer." ... But while River had no problems immersing herself in the world of show business, Kelly admitted that it’s been quite difficult to keep up with her kids’ school events because of her weekday work schedule.

'My show is on': 'The White Lotus,' 'The Pitt' help usher in the return of appointment TV

Some fans have abandoned the binge-watch model in favor of week-by-week TV for shows like "The Last of Us" and "Severance." Though streaming services make some series available to binge-watch at our convenience, there’s been a resurgence in fans tuning into new episodes of shows during their original airtime rather than catching them later online. Sound familiar? It’s called appointment TV. And it’s back. ... “One thing I love about appointment TV is how it gives you something to look forward to throughout the week. This is the first time in my life I’ve had a consistent adult job, and even though I love it, the schedule can undoubtedly get monotonous from time to time,” Bryant told Yahoo Entertainment.More than 100 fans responded to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for their appointment TV habits on X. Several mentioned that they keep track of their shows in their planners, making sure to watch as close to their original airtimes as possible to avoid spoilers, which can be a necessary evil for those wanting to discuss what they’ve just watched online. ... “Appointment tv was a core memory for most millennials and it sucks that it’s largely gone!” one X user wrote. “I found myself basking in the nostalgia of must-see TV in college and want more to look forward to!” another said.Shows like The White Lotus and Severance make for particularly great appointment TV because of the mystery element that’s fun to solve from episode to episode.Kaila, a 26-year-old marketing specialist, has The Pitt, The Studio and The White Lotus in her rotation right now. She told Yahoo Entertainment that, had her appointment TV shows been released through the binge model, “conversation would have died 3 weeks in as the conversation around [the series] would have been exhausted.”

13 Great Shows You Can’t Find Streaming Anywhere (and Why)

The ’80s were a time in which network TV was dominated by workplace settings — usually legal or medical dramas — not character-driven dissections of the Vietnam War, which at the time was still very fresh in viewers’ minds. The title of the show referred to My Khe Beach in Da Nang, and the action unfolded at an evacuation hospital that was unafraid to show the true horror of war.You would think that would be enough to bring this show back in some form. What is taking so long? It’s probably ownership. Buena Vista (the home-entertainment branch of Disney at the time) released the first season on DVD in 2002, and it took three more years and a petition to get year two out. It never bothered with the third season, and the company’s license to the program reportedly expired in 2007. When asked about the lack of streaming, Zwick told Variety in 2020, “It’s a mystery, and a vexing one.”Some of the best TV shows of the past 40 years are missing from streaming services. Here’s why shows like ‘China Beach’ and ‘Early Edition’ aren’t streaming anywhere.Shows will occasionally be pulled out of this TV limbo, like Moonlighting (Hulu) and Northern Exposure (Prime), so we will endeavor to keep this list updated, and maybe it will put enough pressure on the companies that control the rights to these shows to do what they should and simply make them available.

"Of course, I got busy with my show and writing cookbooks, and the boys got busy with football, the girls had volleyball and soccer.""I always enjoy having her around," Ladd adds. I'm a day-one Apple TV+ subscriber, and these are my 7 favorite shows ever

These are my all-time favorite Apple TV+ shows. The platform launched six years ago, and these are the best shows to give it a try. Part of it is due to my work as a tech journalist, but I also just enjoy Apple services. For a long time, Apple Originals consisted of just a dozen titles. I really enjoyed The Morning Show, Dickinson, and parts of Servant, and it was nice watching the library grow slowly over time.If you’re new to the service or just trying to find the best shows on the platform, here are some pro tips from someone who’s been subscribed for nearly six years. The epic sci-fi adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s novels blew my mind a few years ago. What can I say about a show that just launched and is already one of the best Apple TV+ productions? This sports dramedy (yep, I love the genre) stars Owen Wilson as a former golf star mentoring a teenage phenom on a road trip tour. With each episode running around half an hour (my ideal length), the show offers more than a great story. The show also features Rivian’s first vehicles and dives into the challenges of traveling electric. It’s a unique, must-watch experience. Finally, I saved one of my favorite Apple TV+ shows for last. The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy blends charming awkwardness with global exploration.
